Torch on the Porch in Pine Mountain

Torch on the Porch in Pine Mountain

To commemorate the opening this weekend of the Rio Summer games, I’d like to share the day the Olympic Flame was carried down our street on its way to Atlanta for the 1996 Olympic games.

There was an official welcoming ceremony in downtown Pine Mountain, but the real fun was on King Avenue because that was the route someone had chosen for the flame’s carrier!

All the residents turned out on their grand old porches which had been festively decorated to watch the torch bearer make his way down the street. My kids made a banner and used pipe cleaners to make little Olympic ring mobiles which hung from the front porch. Being summer, all the planters were ablaze with color.

We lined the street and waited. And waited. Finally, the parade arrived and we saw the man in white jogging with the flame held high. He had quite an entourage. Trucks, motorbikes, police, cameras, more bikes, trucks, etc.

Then he was gone and we resumed our porch parties. Much to our surprise, a little while later, he came back! He must have liked our happy street party because he came to my house and gave all the kids a turn holding the torch. What a nice surprise! I never got his name, be we certainly appreciated his taking the time to come back and visit. Real Olympic Spirit!

That was a once in a lifetime happening in our little town. What a day to remember!
