Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day!

Going out to see fireworks this holiday?

We are lucky in Pine Mountain to have a great display here in our backyard at Callaway Gardens Robin Lake Beach. For several summers the Swinging Medallions have played beach music before the show so we can dance the shag and cut-up on the sand.
When I was little I remember hating the loud explosions! I’m still not too fond of them, but they sure are pretty. Now I can take my grandson to see the display. We can almost see them from the front porch but what fun to be there with the other revelers.

We used to have a fun “small but sincere” walking parade in downtown Pine Mountain every July 4th. Folks would decorate their bikes, wagons, strollers, golf carts, dogs and march, well, walk, around the median a couple times. Very low key. It’s hot out there, after all. I miss that and we are talking about reviving it for next year. Things are easy to do in Pine Mountain….just takes someone with interest and time to organize something.

Another tradition is “Fire Up the Valley” BBQ in Pine Mountain Valley, truly a community event/family reunion. That is Saturday, July 2nd.

One of the most fun times I have ever had on the 4th of July was when a friend and I took the day off and started out on our bicycles, with no particular route planned. We wound up in Woodbury, hot and thirsty. We stopped at the Carroll Farms peach stand where we ate ripe peaches and cooled off. That was the first annual “Peach Ride”.

Whatever you do, take time to be grateful for our freedom. We ain’t perfect, but I don’t want to be anywhere else. Thank you to all who have fought and sacrificed in places far away and on homeland to win and keep us free.
